The OM System OM-1 is a high-end Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera that marks a new era for the company formerly known as Olympus. Sporting a 20MP quad-pixel AF Stacked CMOS sensor, this camera is built for speed and versatility, with a rugged design and environmental sealing rated to IP53. It boasts 1053 autofocus points and offers blackout-free shooting at up to 50 frames per second with autofocus (AF) and autoexposure (AE), or 120 fps with AF and AE locked. The OM-1 also features significant image stabilization, capable of up to 7EV of correction, or 8EV with compatible lenses.

The camera supports 4K video capture at up to 60p in both UHD and DCI formats, and up to 240 fps in 1080p for slow-motion footage. It has dual UHS-II card slots and advanced subject tracking that can recognize a variety of subjects including vehicles, animals, and human faces. The OM-1 is available for $2199 for the body only, or $2799 as a kit with the new 12-40mm F2.8 PRO II lens.

OMDS has introduced new computational photography modes such as Hand-held High Resolution mode, which combines multiple images for a high-resolution output, and Live ND, which simulates long exposures. Additionally, the OM-1 offers HDR, Live Composite, and Focus Stacking modes for creative photography.

The camera’s design includes a substantial grip and maintains the familiar control layout of previous Olympus cameras, though some controls may feel small for those with larger hands. The viewfinder has been upgraded to a 5.76M dot OLED display with a fast refresh rate, and the OM-1 also features a fully-articulated touchscreen. The menu system has been revamped, although it may require some time to get used to.

Powered by a new BLX-1 battery, the OM-1 can shoot for extended periods and be charged via USB-C. The camera’s impressive speed and processing power allow for rapid-fire shooting and efficient image combination for multi-shot modes. Video capabilities have also been enhanced, with the ability to shoot 10-bit footage in H.265 format and output Raw video to external recorders.

Despite some interface quirks and limitations in continuous autofocus tracking, the OM-1 stands out as a powerful all-rounder, particularly suited for wildlife photography and other scenarios where its compact size and fast shooting capabilities are advantageous. It’s not a perfect camera, but it offers a compelling package for those seeking a balance of speed, image quality, and portability.
